Overview:

Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is a Miami University artmaking program for older adults living with dementia. As a NaviGo scholar, you will work one-on-one with a resident at the Victorian at Riverside. Your partner/resident is the artist. Your role is to sit beside them and encourage their choices. We train you, it’s fun! Over five artmaking sessions, you will get to know one resident well and produce a portfolio of beautiful art together.

Seeking:

• Juniors and seniors with the interest in, or aptitude for, helping professions such as healthcare, psychology, education, counseling, art therapy, social work, etc. to assist elderly residents in an assisted-living community
• Students with open-mindedness, patience, and the ability to make the time commitment

Students will Explore & Experience:

• Develop close relationships with people living with dementia and other student volunteers.
• Learn how to communicate and facilitate the creative process of people who are living with dementia.
